It's that time. Time for
BABY FOOD!
We've been hearing over and over, when are they going to eat food, when are you going to feed them, etc. etc. We wanted to wait for couple of reasons.
1. We agreed that the girls should be exclusively breast feed for the first six months before we knew about the mono-mono twin stuff. After the girls were born we decided with the doctor that it would be best to wait until at least 6 months, corrected age. That makes it 8 months.
2. The next big thing that we decided was to wait for the girls to show us they were ready. We waited for them to express an interest in food when it was around. They started doing that about a week or two ago.
We decided that this would be a great time to start with food!
Back when we got pregnant (even before we knew we where having twins) we decided we wanted to make our own baby food. It's much healthier and we could control what the girls were eating. It seems like even "healthy" baby food has way to many ingredients in them. So to the kitchen we went!
After lots and lots of research and reading we decided the best food to start with was going to be Sweet Potatoes (or if you're the FDA - yams, this was VERY confusing to John).
One of the websites that we really liked in all our research was:
We started by baking the sweet potato for about an hour, until they were nice and soft.
Then scooped out the potato from the skin.
We put this into our magic bullet that we got for Christmas (it makes great smoothies too).
Most recipes or directions will tell you to add water or milk to smooth it out.
We went with breast milk since we had a bit of a supply of it.
(about 3 freezers full)
Notice the date, 7-24-10, just a couple days after the girls were born!
So we blended it all up and put it in the container to freeze, except a small amount for the next day.
Once it was time to feed the girls they were excited!
Ok, maybe excited isn't the best word to describe it.
We had been putting them into their high chairs to "practice" and they do really good. You can tell by the look on their faces they knew something was up.
Ada took hers pretty well.
She didn't really care for it I don't think.
Evie wanted to feed herself.
We gave her a spoon to let her play thinking it would help.
It didn't.
From this look do you think she liked it?
Overall, it wasn't overly smooth.
They ate very little.
It finished with them trying to make sure they didn't have to eat anymore.
Evie would clamp her mouth shut and Ada would push away the spoon.
So we had some leftovers.
We didn't save it though, because we have plenty frozen.
After they ate they weren't mad at us... luckily {grin}
Ada still wanted to get my toes.
And Evie wanted to play with the spoon - just to tease us I think!
Well, hopefully next time goes better!
